The William O. Douglas Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists is sponsoring a public discussion about media coverage of mental health issues Thursday at the Richland Public Library.
Guest speakers include former Herald Executive Editor Ken Robertson, KEPR anchor Whitney Ward, Lourdes' Vice President of Behavioral Health Barbara Mead, and a representative from the Tri-City chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness.
The 90-minute discussion will cover topics such as how newsrooms form policies about reporting on mental illness and suicides and when it's appropriate to include information about a person's mental illness in a story.
It is free. Nonperishable food items will be collected for the Tri-Cities Food Banks.
