Mother Nature sometimes tricks new parents. For months while Loni Montes was pregnant, she and her husband, Luis, thought they'd be taking a new daughter home to Pasco.
They painted the baby's room pink, picked out a pink lamp trimmed in fluffy feathers and choose pink-and-white bedding.
"There's even a pink-and-white polka-dot dresser. It's all pink, pink, pink," Luis Montes said.
Then Mother Nature pulled a joke on them.
On June 27, Loni Montes gave birth to an 8-pound 8-ounce, 20-inch baby boy at 3:53 p.m.
"We were caught by surprise," said Luis Montes, who was by his wife's side through the delivery.
"When I pushed him out, we both thought, 'Wait a minute.' He must have been hiding from us during the ultrasound," she said.
Five months into her pregnancy, Loni Montes was told by her obstetrician to expect a girl.
"He was so confident, I never questioned it, even though I know ultrasounds aren't 100 percent accurate," she said.
The fact that she suffered from morning sickness early in her pregnancy also helped convince Loni Montes she was carrying a girl.
"I had the same symptoms with my first daughter, so when the doctor said that I was having a girl, I didn't think anything of it," she said.
Her friends threw Loni Montes a baby shower. The colors were lime green and -- surprise -- pink. The theme, all girl.
Last week, she and her sister went shopping and bought even more girly stuff, Luis Montes said.
The whole family, including the couple's children, Stephen, 16, Sammy, 15, Bentley, 13, Ashlyn, 10, and Suzie, 9, were ready to welcome a new sugar-and-spice baby into the family.
"Instead, we were surprised, but it's a fun surprise. He's healthy, he's adorable, and we couldn't be happier," Loni Montes said.
