Benton PUD is warning customers of a telephone scam that appears to be targeting utility customers in the region.
Benton PUD customers have received calls in which they are told their account is past due and will be disconnected if payment is not made. The callers are asking for credit card information, claiming they will process a payment with the information.
"This kind of scam is a good reminder that you should never give out your credit card information over the telephone," said Paula Ball, Benton PUD customer service manager, in a news release.
"Benton PUD does not contact customers by telephone and ask for credit card information to avoid disconnection when an account is past due."
If customers are unsure if a call actually is from Benton PUD, they should hang up and call Benton PUD customer service at 582-2175.
Benton PUD serves 47,000 customers in Kennewick, Finley, Benton City, Prosser and outlying areas.
