Benton County commissioners have terminated the lease with Sun Downs Training Center at the Benton County Fairgrounds in Kennewick.
Bob Lawrence said he received the lease termination letter this week, advising him that he has to clear out of the fairgrounds by the end of next Thursday.
Lawrence, who lives in Burbank, runs the Sun Downs Training Center to provide equestrian facilities for the public. He also sponsors horse-related events, such as Mexican rodeos, which he described as concerts.
Lawrence claims county officials mistakenly thought his liability insurance had lapsed. He said his insurance company failed to record that he made two payments last month. As a result, a late notice for this month's payment was issued.
Lawrence said he corrected the misunderstanding with two county employees, but the message wasn't passed along to the commissioners' staff who issued the termination letter.
Commissioner Shon Small told the Herald there was more than an insurance issue. He would not explain further.
Commissioner Leo Bowman said he believed Lawrence also had fallen behind on making periodic payments to the county as required by the lease.
Lawrence said the termination letter from the county did not say what he had done wrong or that he had run afoul with the lease.
The letter stated the county has the right and sole discretion to terminate the lease for any reason it determines is in the county's best interest.
The letter was signed by commission Chairman Jim Beaver, who could not be reached for comment.
