Firefighters in Benton County scurried to a rash of fires throughout the county Sunday afternoon.
Units from Benton County Fire No. 1 and 2 responded at 3 p.m. to a string of fires along the westbound lanes of I-82 between Benton City and Prosser.
The blazes destroyed about 30 acres near milepost 95 east of the Yakitat Road and burned grassy areas about 9 miles farther west toward Prosser.
No further details were available from the fire agencies.
There also was a fire at 5 p.m. east of Antinori Road near Red Mountain in West Richland.
Capt. Ed Dunbar of Benton County Fire No. 4 said about 13 acres caught fire as a result of target shooting in the grassy area. The responsible parties apparently left before firefighters arrived, he said.
Another fire occurred late Sunday afternoon south of Kennewick near milepost 118 when a sports utility vehicle caught fire and the flames spread to dry grass along the highway.
The last fire reported Sunday was just before 6 p.m. at 203 S. Young Place in Kennewick.
The Kennewick Fire Department responded to find a small fire in the garage area. Firefighters put out the flames and kept a vehicle in the garage from being damaged, said battalion chief Tod Kreutz. There were no injuries, and the cause is under investigation, Kreutz said.
