A wrong-way driver killed early Saturday in a head-on crash near the Oregon state line has been identified as a 51-year-old Yakima man.
Washington State Patrol troopers still are investigating whether Stephen Luchsinger was under the influence of alcohol or drugs, causing him to get on Interstate 82 in the wrong direction.
But, Trooper James Zane said the man hit by Luchsinger -- Alejandro Valdez, 43, of Kennewick -- was arrested for DUI.
Luchsinger was driving east in the westbound lanes of I-82 south of Kennewick, when he crashed into Valdez's truck. Luchsinger had been driving the wrong way for at least two miles before the collision, Zane told the Herald on Monday.
Never miss a local story.
Several other motorists were on I-82 and reported the wrong-way driver to 911 before the 2:36 a.m. wreck, he said.
Coffin Road, the closest exit to the crash site, is about four miles away. Investigators still are trying to reach all of the 911 callers about what they saw.
Luchsinger died at the scene. Valdez was treated at Kennewick General Hospital.
