The Tri-City Regional SWAT Team was activated Saturday morning after a Finley man reportedly threatened firefighters responding to a blaze on his property.
Benton Fire District 1 crews were called out to 205105 E. Schuster Road at 4 a.m., but when they got on scene the suspect threatened them and told them to get off his property, Benton County Sheriff Steve Keane told the Herald.
When sheriff's deputies responded, homeowner John E. Stevens also reportedly threatened them before going inside to arm himself. After deputies saw that Stevens had a shotgun, they called the SWAT team.
SWAT team members tried to negotiate with Stevens for almost four hours, Keane said.
The 57-year-old man was believed to be on drugs, Keane said.
The standoff ended after SWAT members deployed a chemical spray into the house to drive him out.
Stevens was arrested on suspicion of felony harassment and second-degree assault for displaying the shotgun at deputies, said Kennewick police Cmdr. Scott Child.
During the standoff, the fire apparently burned into an area that wasn't threatening any structures and smoldered. Once the suspect was in custody, fire crews were able to go in and extinguish the fire. The cause is under investigation.
