A Finley shop building was destroyed by fire Tuesday afternoon that caused some minor damage to a home and mobile home on the property.
Fire crews from Benton Fire District 1 and the Kennewick Fire Department were called to the blaze at 1012 E. 19th Ave. at 12:31 p.m. after a neighbor spotted flames and called 911.
While firefighters worked, a thick, acrid column of smoke rose from the metal shop building and was visible from as far away as south Richland.
Mike Harris, deputy chief for Benton Fire District 1, said the shop contained tires, plastics, tools, oils and other items that helped fuel the blaze.
About 20 firefighters worked for nearly an hour to douse the fire. By 1:30 p.m., they were sifting through still-smoking debris and putting out lingering hot spots.
No one was believed to be home when the fire started. No injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, but Harris said it appears to have started in or near a small building near the shop and then spread to inside.
