Dr. Ekta Khurana is moving Columbia Basin Pediatrics to a new location near Road 100 in Pasco.
The new $1 million office at 9521 Sandifur Parkway in Pasco will be just off Interstate 182.
Khurana joined Columbia Basin Pediatrics at 945 Goethals Drive in Richland as a part-time pediatrician about five years ago.
Shortly after she started, Dr. Carol Endo, who started the practice in 1994, decided to move, and Khurana became the clinic's owner.
Khurana worked in pediatrics in India before she immigrated to the United States in 1998 with her husband, Navjot Khurana, who is a dentist.
Now, Baker Construction & Development of Spokane has started work on the project.
The 10,580-square-foot building will have room on the first floor to lease. Khurana said the first floor can be renovated once a tenant is found.
Khurana said that she hopes to be in the 4,500-square-foot space on the second floor of the new two-story building in October. It will give Khurana and her seven employees more room, and she said her staff is looking forward to having an actual breakroom.
The new building also will have more space for Khurana to teach medical students from the University of Idaho and nursing students from Columbia Basin College and Charter College. She said she enjoys having students observe her and gain experience examining patients.
"It keeps you on your toes," she said.
But Khurana said she doesn't plan to expand Columbia Basin Pediatrics beyond the patients she and nurse practitioner Michelle Crawford can see.
Instead, she said she hopes to improve the quality of care she and her staff are able to offer.
"Quality is the key here," she said.
