SUNNYSIDE -- A Sunnyside apartment fire Sunday destroyed one eight-unit apartment building and damaged two apartments in another building.
Trucks from the Sunnyside Fire Department responded at 5:30 a.m. to 910 E. Harrison Ave. and found an apartment on the second story in flames.
Driven by strong winds from the northwest, the fire spread to other apartments in the same building and threatened another eight-unit complex to the west.
It took the 25 firefighters about an hour to get the blaze under control and another several hours to extinguish it.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, however preliminary information indicates the cause may have been barbecue briquettes that were not completely extinguished and stored close to combustible materials.
