OTHELLO -- Families and friends of military veterans who lived in Othello, Connell and Royal City are invited to attend a memorial service Tuesday.
American Legion Posts No. 209 and No. 28 and the Washington State Army National Funeral Honors Team will hold a Veteran Memorial service at 1 p.m. at the Bess Hampton Memorial Garden in Othello. The ceremony is for veterans from all branches of the military.
The ceremony is to recognize those veterans who -- either because their family did not know they were eligible or because there was no service -- were laid to rest without military honors.
The Honor Guard has been holding Veterans Memorial Tribute Programs since Congress passed a statute in 2000 saying all eligible military veterans, who were discharged honorably, were due military honors during their funeral services.
"As each name is read there will be a ceremonial ringing of a bell and a moment of science to honor them," said Pfc. Marco Cerda of the Army National Guard and a member of Washington's Honor Guard.
Those being honored are: George Alvarado, Kenneth K. Yurain, Garn L. Gilbert, William G. Briggs, Matt Thompson, Donald F. Sutton, William R. Brischle, Everett C. Sanders.
