The Kennewick Fire Department will be getting thermal imaging cameras and new firefighting protective gear thanks to a federal grant.
The department received a $151,494 grant through the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Assistance to Firefighters Grants program, said Fire Chief Neil Hines.
The federal government covers 80 percent of the grant, or $121,196, and the city has to cover $30,298.
"Thermal imaging cameras use infrared technology to allow firefighters to see through smoke and darkness to aid in quickly finding victims and identifying hidden fire within concealed spaces," Hines said. "The grant will also provide the city with the ability to place every firefighter into a set of new protective gear, providing our firefighters with the highest level or protection when working in the most extreme fire conditions."
