Keith Thomson, a former president of Fluor Hanford, died Thursday at his home in Rancho Mirage, Calif. He was 73 and had been battling cancer.
Thomson, a British native, moved to the United States in 1964 to work for Bechtel National. He joined Fluor Corp. in 1991, holding several international and U.S. assignments before coming to Hanford in spring 2001.
He retired from his position as Fluor Hanford president in February 2003. During his tenure at Hanford, almost half of the K Basins' 2,300 tons of spent nuclear fuel were moved to a safer location and significant amounts of plutonium were neutralized at the Plutonium Finishing Plant.
In November 2003, Thomson married former Rep. Jennifer Dunn, R-Wash. She died in 2007.
A celebration of Thomson's life is expected to be held in San Francisco in February or March.
