Next month, the Mid-Columbia Libraries could go from zero to more than 90,000 "friends" on Facebook.
On Tuesday, the district board approved a social media policy that will see the library set up a Facebook account by Aug. 1, said Kyle Cox, the libraries' interim director.
"We have not used any social media to this point, but this will give us a way to connect with our customers and allow them to interact with us," Cox said.
The library district has more than 90,000 card-carrying patrons, and each has a chance to win an iPad 2.

Sign up for the Mid-Columbia Libraries' Facebook page during the month of August, then follow contest instructions, said communications director Kate Holloway.
The district plans to set up a Twitter account later this year, Cox said.
Also Tuesday, the libraries district board met in a closed-door session to talk about acquiring property in west Pasco for another branch.
The board is close to making a selection, which may require a special meeting within the next month to close the deal, Cox said.
