SUNNYSIDE -- Two Sunnyside restaurants, The Safari at 616 E. Edison Ave., and El Conquistador, 612 E. Edison Ave., were destroyed by fire Sunday.
The initial call came at 7:45 a.m., and firefighters on the first Sunnyside Fire Department engine on the scene found fire toward the back of The Safari, said Fire Chief Aaron Markham.
Mutual aid was immediately requested from the Granger and Grandview fire department, quickly followed by a second request for aerial equipment from Prosser Fire District No. 3 and the city of Toppenish fire department.
"The two restaurants had what appeared to be a common roof and ceiling structure. The fire traveled across the void spaces between the roof and a layer of ceiling structure not accessible from the interior," Chief Markham said.
Firefighters were able to contain the blaze between the Blue Moon Bar & Grill to the east of the burning buildings and another two-story structure to the west.
"After all the mutual aid units arrived on scene, we had four aerial units and eight engines with supporting command staff from 10 different fire agencies," Chief Markham said.
The cause of the fire is unknown. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives was contacted and are on the scene.
They will begin investigating as soon as smaller fires under the collapsed roofing material are extinguished.
The estimated dollar loss of the two businesses is between $500,000 and $1 million.
