WALLA WALLA -- A bevy of colorful hot-air balloons lift off this morning as the Walla Walla Balloon Stampede gets under way at the fairgrounds.
Daily launches start at 6:30 a.m. today, Saturday and Sunday from Garrison Field next to the fairgrounds, and a night glow is scheduled Saturday night starting at dusk at the fairgrounds.
Admission is free to the event unless you plan to attend tonight's champagne reception for the balloon pilots, which starts at 5:30 p.m. in the pavilion at the fairgrounds. Cost is $25. Tickets are available at the Walla Walla Chamber office, 29 E. Sumach St.
Balloons won't be the only entertainment happening throughout the three day event.

Today the main stage entertainment starts at 3 p.m. featuring a kids talent contest and music by Money 4 Nothing. The band also provides the music for the dance party that starts at 6:30 p.m.
On Saturday the kids museum is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the flower building. The volleyball tournament is planned from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the lawn east of the pavilion. A spelling bee is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the community building and there will be a session to meet the pilots from noon to 4 p.m. at Garrison Field next to the fairgrounds.
The night glow and fireworks show starts at 7 p.m. with music by Copious Notes, which also will provide the music for the dance that starts at 9:30 p.m.
On Sunday there's a pancake breakfast in the community building starting after the balloons lift off at 6:30 a.m. Cost is $6 at the door. There also will be entertainment throughout the day.
