The cool, damp weather in the Tri-Cities will continue for another month, according to the National Weather Service.
After an April that was the fourth coolest on record in the Tri-Cities and at Hanford, May also is expected to be colder than normal.
Normal highs for Kennewick rise from 72.6 degrees at the start of May to 76.5 degrees at month's end. Normal lows rise from 46.1 degrees to 49.6 degrees.
Temperatures in April averaged colder than normal in the Tri-Cities for the third month in a row.
At Hanford, the low temperature of 26 degrees on April 12 tied the record for the date, according to the Hanford Meteorology Station.
In addition, the high temperature of 48 degrees was the coolest on record for March 15 since records began being kept at Hanford in 1945. The previous record was 54 degrees in 2006.
In the Tri-Cities, the average temperature in April was 49.9 degrees, 4.2 degrees below normal. High temperatures averaged 60.6 degrees, which was 6.4 degrees below normal. The highest temperature was 75 degrees on April 2.
Low temperatures averaged 39.1 degrees, 2.1 degrees below normal. The lowest temperature was 31 degrees on April 8.
At Hanford temperatures averaged 48.4 degrees, which was 5 degrees below normal. The highest temperature was 75 degrees on April 1.
Precipitation this month is expected to be greater than the normal of 0.67 inch in the Tri-Cities, according to the weather service.
April was drier than normal in the Tri-Cities with 0.3 inch recorded, which was 0.21 below normal.
At Hanford, precipitation totaled 0.25 inch, which is less than half the normal 0.55 inch.
Precipitation for the year in the Tri-Cities has reached 2.13 inches, which is 0.42 inch below normal. Since the start of the water year in October, precipitation in the Tri-Cities has totaled 6.75 inches, 1.54 inches above normal.
At Hanford, precipitation for 2011 through April totaled 1.68 inches, well below the normal 2.76 inches.
The peak wind gust in the Tri-Cities last month was 40 mph April 16. At Hanford, it was 48 mph April 21. The average wind speed for the month at Hanford was 10.2 mph, 1.7 mph faster than normal.
