A young West Richland mother of three died of lethal carbon monoxide levels as a result of smoke inhalation, Benton County Coroner John Hansens said Thursday.
The cause of death initially was listed as "inconclusive" but Hansens released the updated information after getting toxicology results.
Further toxicology tests are being performed and the manner of death still is pending those results and the fire investigation, Hansens said.
Sandy St. George, 26, was found dead inside her West Richland home after flames destroyed the house and her husband's adjacent shop.
Never miss a local story.
Thomas St. George, 27, escaped the March 18 fire after he said he was awakened by his barking dog. He was treated for smoke inhalation at the hospital.
The fire remains under investigation. West Richland police also are looking into reports of an inappropriate sexual relationship between Thomas St. George and a teen babysitter.
The family has three sons, ages 1 to 4, who reportedly were staying at the teen baby-sitter's home the night of the fire.
The girl's parents filed for a restraining order April 18 to keep Thomas St. George away from their now-16-year-old daughter.
The parents said St. George gave the girl a car, laptop and cellphones so they could secretly communicate. He also reportedly gave the girl money to cover the legal costs of seeking emancipation from her parents.
In court documents filed by the girl, she denied any sexual involvement with St. George and claimed detectives tried to trick her into staying stuff about St. George.
She also claimed her parents were trying to force her to lie about St. George.
Earlier this week, St. George posted a lengthy statement on his email page saying he wished he could have saved his wife in the fire. He also said he "didn't have a sexual relationship" with the teen but admitted they had "a close friendship."
