HERMISTON -- The northeast corner of Oregon has a new big city -- Hermiston.
The 2010 U.S. Census shows that Hermiston is now slightly larger than neighboring Pendleton.
The Oregonian newspaper reported that the Hermiston's population stands at 16,745 -- which is 133 more people than the census recorded in Pendleton, 25 miles to the east.
Longtime Hermiston City Manager Ed Brookshier said Hermiston is more of a working town while Pendleton is known for tourism and its rodeo.
But census figures said Hermiston has more young people -- 31 percent of the population is under 18, compared to 22 percent in Pendleton.
