A spring storm is causing the Yakima River to rise rapidly, but current forecasts show it cresting just below the river's flood stage in Benton City.
Flood stage at the Kiona gauge in Benton City is 13 feet, said Sara Schwartz, spokeswoman for Benton County Emergency Ser-vices.
The National Weather Service shows the river cresting late Saturday night at 12.82 feet. As of 5 p.m. Thursday, the river at the Kiona gauge was 7 feet.
Freeze levels are rising in the mountains following recent heavy snowfall, which leads to a fast snow melt, Schwartz said.
There was no flood warnings or watches in effect yet in Benton County, but Schwartz warned that the Yakima River will be running high and fast.
Residents living in low-lying areas or near riverbanks are encouraged to take time now to secure items or move them to higher ground.
