Students from the Mid-Columbia will spend Saturday at the Benton County Justice Center in Kennewick, competing in the annual YMCA Mock Trial competition.
The program allows students to participate in "true-to-life" courtroom drama, which each team of attorneys and witnesses presenting a prepared case for trial before a real judge.
A "jury" of attorneys rates the teams while the presiding judge rules on the motions, objections and ultimately the merits.
The mock trials give students a chance to develop critical thinking and analytical skills, the are of oral advocacy and gain respect for the law and judiciary, officials said.
Never miss a local story.
Teams competing from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday are from Kennewick, Southridge, Richland, The River Academy, Tri-Cities Prep and Mt. Spokane high schools.
The winner of the competition will move on to compete in the state championship in Olympia in March.
