Travelers are being warned to expect rolling slowdowns today and Thursday on interstates 84 and 82 as the Hanford vitrification plant melter assembly rolls through Oregon.
The 190-foot-long transporter that carries the 125-ton melter assembly should cross the Idaho border into Oregon by 10 a.m. today, according to the Oregon Department of Transportation.
The transporter takes up two lanes. Even though drivers are traveling along the edge of the road where it is possible to let traffic pass, the transporter will slow traffic at bridges and narrow shoulder areas.
The melter assembly is the second one to be shipped to Hanford from Utah, where it was manufactured.
It will be used to turn low-level radioactive waste into a stable glass form for disposal.
