A walk to decompress after doing his homework ended with a south Richland teen hospitalized after a bicyclist collided with him on a bike path near Tagaris Winery.
Cody Olsen, 18, a Richland High senior who also is a Tri-City Herald news intern, suffered multiple fractures to his face including a broken nose in the accident at about 9:25 p.m. Monday.
Olsen said he had decided to take a walk in the area near his home after finishing his homework.
"I remember I was walking and then I woke up in the ambulance," said Olsen, who was being treated Tuesday at Kadlec Regional Medical Center in Richland.
Medics said it was a head-on collision, but Olsen said he thinks he was hit from behind given the nature of his injuries. "I would have seen the bicyclist," said Olsen, who wasn't wearing any reflective clothing.
The bicyclist also was hurt, he said, but "he was much better off than I was." Olsen added he doesn't blame anyone. "It was purely an accident."
