WALLA WALLA -- National POW/MIA Recognition Day will be celebrated today at the Jonathan M. Wainwright Memorial VA Medical Center, Parade Grounds.
A POW/MIA remembrance ceremony will begin at 10:30 a.m., followed by a reception and Missing Person Ceremony at 11 a.m. in the theater in Building 78.
Organizations involved include AMVETS Post 1111, VFW Posts 992 & 466, American Legion Post 32, and Milton Freewater VFW Post 4567. Also invited are James Bogart, a WWII POW who was a member of and survived the Bataan Death March, and Thomas Phelan, a WWII/ Korean veteran who flew B17s and B24s as a bombardier.
Both veterans are part of the Jonathan M. Wainwright VA's local "trading card" series "American Heroes" program that was developed to honor veterans.

The observance is one of six days throughout the year that Congress has mandated the flying of the National League of Families' POW/MIA flag. The others are Armed Forces Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day and Veterans Day.
