WALLA WALLA -- An 18-month-old child was shot and killed Monday afternoon when his 5-year-old brother picked up a rifle, said the Walla Walla County Sheriff's Office.
The Pavel Khomenko family of Walla Walla was working on beehives on Electric Avenue in Walla Walla County at 4:43 p.m. at a shed that contained a .22-caliber semi-automatic rifle. The address is near College Place.
When the 5-year-old picked up the rifle, it discharged and hit his mother, Yelena, and toddler Dmitriy Khomenko, according to police reports.
The family rushed the boy to Providence St. Mary Medical Center in their car, but he was pronounced dead a short time later.
Yelena Khomenko had a superficial wound to her jaw. The accident is being investigated as an accidental shooting.
