Toyota of Tri-Cities and the Northwest Toyota Dealers Association are seeking donations of unused cell phones through Sept. 30.
They are working wtih Cell Phones for Soldiers, which hopes to collect more than a million cell phones this year to help keep overseas troops connected to their families at home. The group provides soldiers with prepaid calling cards using money from the sale of used cell phones.
Mid-Columbia residents can drop off their donations at Toyota of Tri-Cities, 6321 W. Canal Drive, Kennewick.
Donated phones are sent to ReCellular, which pays Cell Phones for Soldiers for each phone, then the money is used to purchase prepaid calling cards that are sent to troops.
About half of the processed phones are reconditioned and resold to wholesale companies in more than 40 countries around the world. Phones and components that cannot be refurbished are dismantled and recycled to reclaim materials.
