KENNEWICK -- The Rollerz Only car club will get its money back after Benton County officials canceled a car show planned for Sunday.
Melina Wenner, county risk manager, said a refund of $945.54 is being repaid because the lease agreement with the Tri-Cities low-riders car club had to be terminated.
Jaime Contreras, Rollerz Only club treasurer, said the money will help offset expenses the club had for planning the event and buying trophies.
Wenner said the original lease agreement was for a car show, but when county officials learned Tuesday that live music would be part of the event, a new agreement was needed.
Never miss a local story.
"At that point we didn't have a signed agreement that would ensure there would be a safe and secure event," Wenner said.
"We had communicated with the club we'd be happy to work with them on a future event. It is doable with live music, but we need to know about it in advance," she said.
Wenner said lease agreements are based on what kinds of activities will occur because it affects the insurance and security the county requires.
But Contreras said he doubts the club members will be going back to the fairgrounds anytime soon.
He said club officers weren't happy about their event, which he said was intended to be family-oriented, being characterized as gang-connected.
"I think we might have to look around for another place to do a car show," he said.
