One eastbound lane of Interstate 82 was reopened Wednesday evening after a persistent wildfire forced the highway to close for part of the afternoon.
The Washington State Department of Transportation said smoke was blowing across the interstate, slowing traffic between Prosser and Benton City.
The fire started about 10 a.m. just east of the Yakitat Road exit, and a couple hours of work appeared to bring the fire under control.
Around 3:20 p.m., the fire flared back up again, sending heavy smoke across all four lanes of the divided highway.
The fire is approaching the Benton City exit, and police are stopping traffic along the highway because of poor visibility.
"If you can avoid this area, please do," Benton County Fire District 2 said. "This will allow crews to work unobstructed."
Firefighters from West Benton Fire and Rescue, Benton County Fire District 4, and Richland Fire Department joined the effort.
