Forty people attended a free educational seminar about skin cancer last month organized by Northwest Cancer Clinic in Kennewick.
Dr. Sidney Smith, a local dermatologist, gave the talk and afterward held a free skin cancer screening for the community. More than 100 people were screened, and Dr. Smith found four definite cancers and 23 lesions that were suspicious for cancer, a news release said.
In the release, Dr. Sheila Rege, medical director of Northwest Cancer Clinic, said, “depending on how many moles a person has (and) how much they have enjoyed boating and other outdoor activities, a person living in the Tri-Cities could have quite a bit of skin cancer and not even realize it unless they get checked out.”
Northwest Cancer Clinic, at 7379 W. Deschutes Ave., holds regular Cancer Chats on Fridays at noon to educate the community about prevention and early detection of different kinds of cancers.
