The Tri-Cities has attracted in another new big-box retailer -- a Marshalls department store.
The 25,000-square-foot, $2.1 million building is under construction next to Petco, Famous Footwear and Target on Queensgate Drive in Richland.
Marshalls sells clothing, shoes, accessories and home decor.
The off-price retailer is owned by the same international corporation that owns T.J. Maxx -- the TJX Companies Inc.
Never miss a local story.
Marshalls typically sells brand name and designer merchandise at prices 20 to 60 percent below the regular prices that department and specialty stores would charge on similar items, according to the retailer's website.
The closest Marshalls to the Tri-Cities is in Spokane, although most of the company's Washington stores are in Western Washington.
Marshalls' parent company plans to continue expansion efforts. Carol Meyrowitz, TJX Companies CEO, recently wrote that the company plans to grow to 5,150 stores in the markets it is currently located in, which includes the U.S., Canada and Europe.
The company, headquartered in Framingham and Marlborough, Mass., has more than 3,200 stores in six countries, three e-commerce sites and about 191,000 employees, according to the company's website. Last year, TJX Companies' revenue was $27.4 billion.
TJX Companies opened its first Tri-City store, T.J. Maxx in Kennewick, in 2000.
The Richland Marshalls, at 2921 Queensgate Drive, is not on Marshalls' list of planned grand openings on the retailer's website.
The Herald was unable to reach Marshalls despite numerous attempts.
