Just a few weeks ago, a Tri-City brewing company and members of the Patriot Club at Washington State University Tri-Cities got together to create a special beer.
On Saturday, Patriot Pilsner goes on tap at Ice Harbor Brewing Co.'s two Kennewick locations to help raise money for the second phase of the veterans' monument at WSU Tri-Cities.
"We have some benches that were donated but they're extremely heavy and we need to prepare the ground at the monument so they won't sink," said Ken Curtis, president of the Patriot Club.
He estimates they'll need about $1,000 to get the benches installed.
Ice Harbor brewers cooked up about 60 gallons of the Patriot Pilsner and Jackson Davis, general manager at Ice Harbor, estimated it will be available for about a month.
During that time $1 of each pint of the pilsner sold will go to the Patriot Club. It will be sold at the brewery at 206 N. Benton St., and at the Clover Island Marina, 350 Clover Island Dr.
At 4 p.m. Saturday, there will be a short ceremony at the brewery on Benton Street before the special barbecued brisket sandwiches, jambalaya and pit beans go on sale.
"Come early; anytime we have a special barbecue like this the food always goes quickly," said Davis.
Patriot Pilsner is a special recipe only used for this particular fundraiser, he said.
There will be several representatives from the Patriot Club at Ice Harbor and, Curtis said, they will be happy to talk about the monument, the club and take donations.
This is the third time in four years Ice Harbor has partnered with the Patriot Club to raise money for the monument.
Davis said Ice Harbor became involved with the project through one of their brewers who is a veteran and also a student at WSU Tri-Cities. He has since gone on to work at a winery, but the club and brewery plan to keep the beer and barbecue going as an fundraiser for the veteran's group.
