- Kevin W. Barney has joined the staff of HDJ Design Group an engineering, planning land survey and landscape architecture firm headquartered in Vancouver, Wash. Barney will work in the Pasco branch as a senior civil engineer and associate principle, and brings more than 24 years of advanced civil engineering and design experience on a variety of public and private projects.
- Mid-Columbia Tri-Cities SCORE has hired Jean Peterson as the SCORE chapter office administrator. Peterson's experience is in office administration, as well as having been involved in numerous industries and served various leadership roles.
- Fidelitas, a family-owned winery established in 2000, has promoted Jess Zander to general manager. Zander joined Fidelitas in May 2008, and has since served as wine club manager and assumed responsibility for marketing programs.

In her new position as general manager, Zander will oversee the winery's direct-to-consumer sales, develop and execute marketing programs, coordinate product development, manage distributor relations and sales and provide financial oversight of the business.
- Nathan Bowles has joined PBS Engineering and Environmental as senior engineer and senior project manager for the Tri-Cities region, responsible for operations and business development at Hanford and throughout Eastern Washington. He has 15 years professional experience, most recently as project manager for CH2M Hill Plateau Remediation Co. at Hanford. His expertise ranges from sampling and testing management to the design of cleanup and remediation strategies.
- Jeffrey Taft and Jakob Stoustrup, global experts in advanced energy systems, have joined Pacific Northwest National Laboratory to lead research related to the smart grid, smart buildings and more.
Taft, a former Cisco chief scientist, is PNNL's chief architect for electric grid transformation. He will lead special projects related to the smart grid, which uses electrical technology, communication networking and control systems to more efficiently and reliably bring energy to homes, office buildings and industrial facilities. He will create a vision for the future electric system and develop a strategy to bring it to reality, with a focus on new control architectures, innovative market and regulatory mechanisms and new operating systems.
Stoustrup, a former professor at Aalborg University in Denmark, leads PNNL's Control of Complex Systems Initiative. Stoustrup will head PNNL's new Control of Complex Systems Initiative. The internally funded research initiative aims to develop mathematical foundations for how the many, diverse components of complex systems in our world collectively operate. Stoustrup and his team will focus on the power grid and grid-connected buildings in the initiative's initial phases, with an ultimate goal of understanding how the future power system could function. That knowledge would be used to power our homes and cities in a more efficient, seamless manner.
