Ice Harbor Brewing Co. owners Mike Hall and Bill Jaquish took a chance when they opened their second location on Clover Island.
Now, Port of Kennewick commissioners are recognizing Hall and Jaquish's contributions by naming them and their business the 2013 Friend of the Port.
The award was presented during the port commission's regular Tuesday meeting.
Port Commission President Skip Novakovich said, "They've just bolstered the notion that the island can be something special for the entire region."
Hall and Jaquish were among the first tenants on Clover Island to come on board with the port's plans to revitalize Clover Island into a destination waterfront, Novakovich said.
Ice Harbor at the Marina brings people onto the island, said Port Executive Director Tim Arntzen. And they've been good tenants, he said.
w Port officials plan to go out to bid for painting white X's on Vista Field Airport's runway soon, Arntzen said.
Painting will likely occur Jan. 2 and Jan. 3, although the airport's official closure time is midnight on Dec. 31, he said.
The port has already notified the Federal Aviation Administration and tenants of the closure, officials have said. The port commission voted earlier this year to close the little-used Kennewick airport in favor of redevelopment.
There is no longer any fuel available at the airport, Arntzen said.
w Port Commissioner Gene Wagner was presented with a service award for his 12 years on the port commission.
Wagner lost a re-election bid this year. His involvement in the port will continue with the work he has done on closing Vista Field Airport, forming a relationship with the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation and partnering with the city of Kennewick on Southridge and Columbia Drive, Novakovich said.
"His fingerprints will live on for generations," Novakovich said.
Port Commissioner Don Barnes and Moak were sworn in as commissioners. Moak will not officially take his seat until Jan. 1.
After the commission meeting, about 70 people attended an open house for Wagner, Arntzen said.
