A nonprofit that accredits thousands of health care organizations and programs has rated Trios Health in Kennewick as a top performer in heart failure care, pneumonia care and surgical care.
Hospital officials announced the recognition last week.
"For me, this is a validation of all the work we've been doing the last several years," said Diane Sanders, chief nursing officer at Trios Health, formerly called Kennewick General Hospital.
Lisa Teske, Trios Health spokeswoman, called the Top Performer distinction "a very significant achievement" and said "it's very exciting for our staff to be recognized in this way."
The Joint Commission's Top Performer on Key Quality Measures recognition goes to hospitals it accredits that earn top marks in certain care areas. "The program is based on data reported in the previous year about evidence-based clinical processes that are shown to be the best treatments for certain conditions," according to information from the commission.
Ten hospitals in Washington, including Trios Health, earned Top Performer recognition in one or more areas for 2012, with the next closest being Providence St. Mary Medical Center in Walla Walla.
Most of the others on the list are on the west side of the state, including Harborview Medical Center, Swedish Medical Center and the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle.
About 1,100 hospitals around the country received the recognition, or about one-third of all hospitals accredited by the commission that reported the 2012 data, according to information from the commission.
Sanders told the Herald that Trios Health staffers "have been working on these types of care protocols for years" and the inclusion in the Top Performer group is the result of a hospital-wide effort. "The Joint Commission's report is a clear indicator that our efforts are making a difference and that we are headed into a bright new future," she added in a statement.
The hospital is on South Auburn Street. It soon will be joined by a second Trios hospital, which is under construction in the Southridge area of Kennewick and is set to open next year.
