A Richland winery has donated $100,000 to the Wine Science Center soon to be under construction at Washington State University Tri-Cities.
The donation from Hamilton Cellars will be one of several new gifts to the center that will be recognized at the ground breaking Sept. 26, said a release.
The center is a $23 million project being built at the corner of University Drive and George Washington Way in north Richland. It will include classrooms, conference rooms, laboratory space and a wine library.
Stacie Hamilton, who co-owns the winery with her husband Russ Hamilton, said the center is critical to supporting the state's wine industry. The winery, which opened in 2011, recently expanded to include 10 acres of vineyard on Red Mountain.
Never miss a local story.
"Years ago, I had to go to UC Davis to get my advanced training in viticulture and enology," Stacie Hamilton said. "It was quickly evident that what works for California does not necessarily translate to our unique soils and climates of the Pacific Northwest."
About $3.9 million still is needed to pay for construction and equip the building.
