Northwest Dairy Farmers and Fred Meyer stores are launching a monthlong "Northwest Farmers Fighting Hunger" food and cash drive starting June 1.
The Tri-City Fred Meyer stores participating are in Kennewick at 2811 W. 10th Ave., and in Richland at 101 Wellsian Way. Donations in the Tri-Cities will go to Second Harvest.
Donations elsewhere will benefit Feeding America affiliates, Food Lifeline and Oregon Food Bank.
Collection bins are in the stores for canned goods and other nonperishable food items -- baby food and disposal diapers are needed as well.
Postcards also will be sent to 136,000 Fred Meyer customers, featuring a discount coupon for a dairy product and also has a barcode that can be scanned at the checkout stand so shoppers can make direct cash contributions.
The food/cash drive is supported by the state Department of Agriculture, the agency's food assistance staff, representatives from Washington's agricultural commodity commissions -- led by the Dairy Farmers of Washington and the food banks.
