The Washington Association of Wine Grape Growers has announced the awards from its recent annual meeting in Kennewick, which was attended by a record 2,200 people.
Servando Rodriquez, Sagemoor Farms production manager, received the 2012 Erick Hanson Memorial Wine Grape Grower Award for his viticultural skills.
Roger Gamache of Gamache Vineyards was honored with the 2012 Industry Service Award for volunteerism and efforts for the wine grape industry.
Ray's Boathouse of Seattle was given the Restaurant of the Year award for how it has showcased and educated diners about Washington wines.
In addition, the association gave out awards for graduate and professional posters.
For professional posters, first place was tied between "Linking Grapevine Bleeding, Budbreak, Shoot Growth, and Fruit Set" by Markus Keller, Giulio Carmassi, Colin Lee and Bhaskar Bondada of Washington State University's Prosser Irrigated Agriculture Research and Extension Center and "WSU Decision Support Tools for Grape Cold Damage Management" by John Ferguson, Lynn Mills, Sean Hills, Michelle Moyer, Gerrit Hoogenboom and Markus Keller of WSU Prosser.
Second place went to "Effect of Bloom-Centered Quinoxyfen Applications on Powdery Mildew Severity on "White Riesling" Berries," by G Grove, M. Moer and M. Schwager of the Prosser WSU center. In third was "Effect of Fruit Maturity, Ethanol Concentration, and Maceration Length in Washington State Merlot Wines Over Two Seasons," by James F. Harbertson, L. Federico Casassa, Christopher W. Beaver, Maria Mireles, Richard C. Larsen, Helene Hopfer and Hildegarde Heymann from the WSU Prosser center's School of Food Science, WSU Prosser and the University of California, Davis, Department of Viticulture and Enology.
For graduate awards, first place went to "New Virus Disease Threatening Washington Vineyards," by Sudarsana Poojari, Olufemi J. Alabi and Naidu A. Rayapati of the Department of Plant Pathology at the WSU Prosser center.
Second place was awarded to "Interactive Effect of Regulated Deficit Irrigation and Skin Contact Time in Cabernet Sauvignon Wines," by L. Federico Casassa, Richard C. Larsen, Christopher W. Beaver, Maria S. Mireles, Markus Keller, William R. Riley, Russell Smithyman and James F. Harbertson, of the WSU Prosser center, WSU Prosser's School of Food Science, Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture and Viticulture and Enology Program Washington State University and Prosser's Ste. Michelle Wine Estates.
And third place went to "Spatial Distribution of Plant Parasitic Nematodes in Washington Vineyards," by A.D. Howland, P.A. Skinkis, R.P. Schreiner and I.A. Zasada from Oregon State University's Department of Horticulture and the USDA-ARS Horticultural Crops Research Laboratory in Corvallis, Ore.
