Whether you need a PVC coupler, a handful of nails or a few shotgun shells, you'll find them all on the shelves of Kennewick's newest hardware store.
Charles Grigg, owner of Grigg's Department Store and Ace Hardware in Pasco, opened his fourth store Monday, an Ace Hardware and Sporting Goods store. It is in Kennewick Plaza, in space vacated by Safeway when the grocery store downsized last year. Grigg also owns two other Ace Hardware stores, both in Richland.
A grand opening sale at the new store is planned sometime in March.
The Griggs aren't bothered by the fact that their newest store is just a few miles from Home Depot.
Never miss a local story.
"Our business is convenience hardware. We have people to help you find what you need quickly, get you to the checkstand and maybe save you enough time that you can visit the other part of the store, the sporting goods, and find what you need to go fishing," said Grigg.
"If you're going to remodel your house you'll go to the box stores. If you have a leaky faucet or need a new outlet, that type of stuff, you'll be able to get in, get out and on with life," said Grigg, the son of Charles Grigg and the third generation to join Grigg Enterprises.
Charlie Grigg's son, CJ Grigg, will manage the new store.
At 17,000 square feet, the Kennewick site is the smallest of the Grigg's Ace Hardware stores. The others run 23,000 and 25,000 square feet.
"But it's just large enough we can get everything in that's needed. For example, instead of 20 different hammers to choose from, we may have 15. But, you know, I only need one hammer to hit my thumb with," Charlie Grigg joked.
"Our freight room is smaller than the other stores too. When things come in they'll have to go right out onto the floor," he said.
About a quarter of the space in the new store will be devoted to sporting goods. It also will carry guns, but the Griggs are waiting for the federal permits to clear before they can stock the Kennewick store.
Charlie Grigg said his family is confident the new store will do well.
"We're fortunate to live where we do. The Tri-City economy is good compared to other places. Just drive to Spokane and you can see they've been way more affected than we have here," he said.
Even though Grigg's department store in Pasco is much different from the three Ace Hardware stores, the family has no plans to close it or make any changes.
"After 73 years, when you own the building, you don't mess with a good thing," Charlie Grigg said.
The Kennewick Ace Hardware employees about 25 people, both full and part-time.
Hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays.
The store is located at 2831 W. Kennewick Ave., Kennewick and can be reached at 619-0615 or its website at www.acetricities.com.
