The Kiwanis International 2010-11 Award of Excellence for the Pacific Northwest District went to the Horse Heaven Hills Chapter in the Tri-Cities.
This is the second time the award has been given and the first time a Division 54 chapter has received it. Division 54 includes six Kiwanis groups in the Tri-Cities, one in Walla Walla and one in Dayton.
There are 45 active divisions in the Pacific Northwest District, which has 331 chapters in Oregon, Washington, Alaska, British Columbia and Idaho.
Division 54 Lt. Governor Larry Hansmeier of Richland said the chapters were rated in five categories: community service; their work in schools; fundraising on the community, national and international levels; how often and how many chapter members visited meetings of other Kiwanis clubs; and membership growth.
Never miss a local story.
"This is a very prestigious award," said Hansmeier. "The Horse Heaven Hills Chapter is not a very large club and, having formed in- March 2007, it's the newest of the Kiwanis clubs in the Tri-Cities. Yet we are strong in all these categories. That says a lot about the members of Horse Heaven Hills."
