SPOKANE -- Costco Wholesale said it wanted competition in the liquor business, and that's what's coming.
Big liquor chains are eyeing Washington, which on June 1 will allow private retailers to sell liquor under an initiative that voters overwhelmingly approved last fall.
Liquor chains Beverages and More, known as BevMo, and Liquor Depot also might open in Washington, according to Andy Robinson, vice president at the commercial real-estate-services firm Kidder Mathews.
Officials at BevMo and Liquor Depot did not return calls.
But two lawsuits have been filed to kill the initiative, I-1183.
Oral arguments are scheduled for March 2 in a Cowlitz County Superior Court case that will be decided before a similar lawsuit is considered in King County Superior Court.
