A Pacific Northwest National Laboratory team and a Hanford employee have won Department of Energy Sustainability Awards.
PNNL in Richland was honored for creating an Environmental Management System Core Team with members from PNNL's research community and those responsible for managing operations and pollution prevention activities at the Department of Energy national laboratory.
The team has helped the lab reduce energy, water and chemical use and waste; reduced the use of fleet vehicles and maintenance costs; and extended equipment life.
At the DOE Hanford Richland Operations Office, Gene Higgins was honored with an Exceptional Service Award for several projects under a new green information technology initiative that consolidated 19 computer network and telecommunications facilities to three.
The change substantially reduced energy consumption and cost. He obtained funding through partnerships and equipment manufacturer "buy back" programs to complete the initiative in three years instead of 10.
His strategic vision has positioned Hanford for thin client and clouding computing and upgrades to heating and air conditioning systems.
