ZILLAH -- A popular Mexican eatery in Zillah has reopened.
El Ranchito opened earlier this month under a new owner.
The restaurant, bakery and tortilleria, which was in operation for nearly six decades before it closed in 2007, was a popular spot for both residents and wine tourists as El Ranchito was often recommended by nearby winery owners.
Miguel Trujillo, El Ranchito's new owner, has been leasing the building at 1319 First Ave. for two years to make tortillas for his Toppenish-based business, Las Dos Victorias, a grocery store and tortilleria.
But when he outgrew his storefront in Toppenish, the 65-year-old decided to remodel the building and reopen the restaurant in its full glory, said Mario Larios, the 28-year-old manager who helped Trujillo remodel the space.
While the owner is new, the restaurant retained the cook who had the El Ranchito's well-regarded recipes.
"I know there's lot of people who used to be regulars," Larios said. "They always ask if everything is the same. Once they try it, they realize it's the same food."
