A sit-down conversation with the energy secretary and a private tour of the White House were among Dale West's rewards for winning a national honor.
West, the fire protection oversight engineer for the Department of Energy Hanford Richland Operations Office, was the 2011 recipient of the Safety System Oversight award by the DOE Office of Health, Safety and Security.
He was honored for his proficiency, hard work and diligence. He established a quarterly system health report for significant events and performed fire protection oversight assessments and contractor monitoring.
Last week he and his wife, Dawn, spent 30 minutes at Energy Secretary Steven Chu's office, and West reported Chu was interested in the work being done at the Hanford nuclear reservation. They were joined by David Huizenga, DOE acting assistant secretary for environmental management.
