UNION GAP -- Borders, the Yakima Valley's largest bookstore retailer, is closing its doors by late September.
"I watched them build the bookcases and I'll watch them tear them down," said Manager Michelle Lara. "It'll be bittersweet."
The Union Gap store is one of 399 closing as part of the company's bankruptcy filing. The Ann Arbor, Mich.-based bookseller is expected to submit its liquidation plan today to the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in New York.
The corporation employs 10,700 workers, including about 40 at the Valley Mall branch at 1700 East Washington Ave. The store opened in 2002.
