Friday is the deadline for at-risk homeowners to qualify for Emergency Homeowners' Loan Program interest-free, forgivable "bridge loans" of up to $50,000 to bring their mortgages current and help them pay their mortgages.
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development awarded Washington state about $56 million for "bridge loans."
The average loan through the program is expected to be about $35,000.
As many as 1,500 at-risk homeowners could benefit from the program, created by the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act of 2010.
A homeowner must be facing foreclosure as a result of a loss in income due to a change in employment or high medical bills to qualify.
Homeowners can apply at www.findEHLP.org.
More information is available on the website or by calling 855-FIND-EHLP (346-3345).
A pre-applicant screening worksheet and third-party authorization must be submitted by Friday to qualify for the program.
