KENNEWICK — There's a new place in Kennewick to get a cup of joe and a bouquet too.
Ted Meier, owner of the Kennewick Flower Shop, has added an espresso bar to his business, opening it earlier this week.
"It's been a long time coming. We've been working on this for two years or more, doing the construction ourselves and getting the city permits and neighbors' approval," said Jennie Oldham, who manages the Tri-City Coffee Co. and the Kennewick Flower Shop. The businesses are at 604 W. Kennewick Ave.
Meier took one of the offices on the west side of the building, gutted it and created the caffeine cafe. There's also a drive-through for those who need their coffee fix fast.
Never miss a local story.
In addition to coffee-based drinks, the shop will be carrying a selection of artisan baked goods and pastries.
"They'll come later. We're still exploring what's available," Oldham said.
The flower shop was rearranged, giving the coffee bar an open area in front for orders and a place for some tables and chairs to seat about a dozen people.
Oldham said Meier chose to add a coffee bar "because the coffee market is growing rapidly and does not look to be slowing down at all, really."
Tri-City Coffee Co. serves only Doma brand organic coffees.
"It's a fair trade company dealing directly with the growers. We put a lot of thought into what we wanted to serve and offer our customers," Oldham said. "Very few other places offer Doma coffees, which, besides being excellent, come from a fair trade company dealing directly with the growers."
Oldham said the aromas of the coffee and flowers complement each other.
"In fact, because I'm in the shop every day, I don't smell the flowers any more. But I sure can smell the coffee," she said.
The coffee shop and drive-through are open from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday, and from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. Later, the business plans to offer Sunday hours.
