HERMISTON -- The Umatilla Chemical Depot is down to its final 1,000 ton containers of mustard weapon agent.
On Thursday, the Umatilla Chemical Agent Disposal Facility destroyed its 1,635th ton container filled with mustard agent, leaving 1,000 remaining. This represents destruction of 62 percent of the mustard ton containers and 99.5 percent of the chemical stockpile. Nerve weapon agent has been destroyed.
"We are systematically and safely processing ton containers 24 hours a day and the numbers of remaining (containers) are steadily shrinking," said Steve Warren, project general manager for URS, the company that built and operates the plant, in a statement.
The last of the chemical weapons are expected to be destroyed in November.
