KENNEWICK -- Paul and Joyce Scharold, owners of two historic homes and two historic business buildings in Kennewick, received the 2010 Kennewick Downtowner of the Year award Tuesday night.
More than 80 people, many of them Kennewick business owners, honored the couple at the annual downtowner banquet at the Clover Island Inn.
In presenting the award, Ann Steiger said the Scharolds have been involved in helping preserve and promote downtown Kennewick through work on the downtown design committee, the historic preservation committee and the city's arts commission.
They also helped start the annual GrapeFest and participate in the community foot race called the GrapeFest Challenge.
Also recognized Tuesday:
* Dale and Dean Shepard, owners of the Blue Moon Cafe and Leo's Catering, who received the 2010 Community Development Block Grant Award.
* John Gravenslund, owner of Washington Hardware, who was named recipient of the 2010 Business of the Year.
* Vince Rundhaug, owner of the Desert Gem jewelry store, who was named the 2010 Ralph and Jo Benton Volunteer of the Year.
* John Clement, a photographer of landscapes and scenery, was the featured speaker. His topic was the value of art to a community.
