HERMISTON -- The Umatilla Chemical Agent Disposal Facility has surpassed 8 million hours without a lost workday accident.
As of Wednesday, it had been 1,692 days, or more than 4 1/2 years, since an employee missed a day of work because of a workplace injury. It's the equivalent of a single person working about 19,230 years without an injury.
This is the first time the disposal facility, which incinerates chemical weapon agent at the Umatilla Chemical Depot, has reached the 8 million safe hours mark. The plant has 830 workers.
The management credits the project's employee-led teams, which focus on safety and environmental compliance, as one key to keeping workers safe.
