Gold's Gym has plans to open next door to the Home Depot in Richland.
Construction is expected to start in late January, said Brett Howell, general manager of Gold's Gym in the Highlands Shopping Center at Highway 395 and West Clearwater Avenue in Kennewick.
The planned facility will be larger and offer additional amenities to customers, he said. "It'll be a destination facility to work out."
The Richland Planning Commission recently approved a site plan for a health/fitness center, south of Duportail Street, north of Interstate 182 and west of the Home Depot store in the Queensgate Drive area.
Never miss a local story.
Utah-based Cascade Fitness, which owns the Gold's Gym franchise in Kennewick, plans to build a 56,700-square-foot facility on 6.79 acres. The company is in the process of buying the land from the owner.
That piece of land is part of a larger commercial, retail parcel owned by the Kennewick Irrigation District, and the entire 45.68-acre parcel is valued at more than $3.88 million, according to Benton County property records.
A health/fitness center is an allowable use in the area and the site plan conforms with the city's development standards and requirements, said Rick Simon, Richland's development services manager. Once the sale is complete, the developer will need to apply for a building permit for the project, he said.
Gold's Gym always had plans for growth in the area, Howell said. The unprecedented success at the Kennewick facility encouraged the company to move ahead quickly. "We made sure locations work out."
Howell said Gold's will operate a temporary 5,000-square-foot health center in the Queensgate area until the proposed building is ready. The new center will start offering discounted membership when "pre-sales" open next month, he said.
"We are excited about the project," Howell said, adding, "We had the most successful pre-sale at Kennewick in the franchise's 45 year history."
"We've been embraced by the Tri-Cities," he said, referring to the continuing growth in membership. Every month about 1,200 guests come and check out the Kennewick facility and on average about half of them become members, Howell said.
